Trempealeau County. A Brief History
Skirting a portion of the mighty Mississippi, Trempealeau County brings striking beauty with its many hills, valleys, and bluffs. Indians within these areas, as with many counties in the state of Wisconsin, played a significant role in the conservation of land and water. The Dakota as well as Chippewa were the main Native American tribes occupying Trempealeau County.
Countless fur trappers, explores and missionaries explored Trempealeau County’s vast woods, water systems, and fertile prairie and bluffs. Notable explorers of this regions were: Sieur du Luth, Nicholas Perrot, and Father Lewis Hennepin.
Felling trees to make their homes and settle the area, pioneers began a local fur trading center. Largely Scandinavian, with some German and Polish, Trempealeau County began to grow and expand with the arrival of the railroad.
In January, 1854 Trempealeau County was established. With the railroad came the establishment of the primary vocation of farming.
Of interest was the establishment of a very successful ski jumping talent and hills. One hill was located in Galesville, Wisconsin on a high embankment (also known as Trempealeau Mountain) overlooking Lake Marinuka.
The Galesville hill was not the only ski jumping hill available in the area. Osseo had one as well.
The sport of ski jumping was taken seriously with official judges and scoring. Some of the best ski jumpers in America were from Trempealeau County. The best-known skiers were known as the “flying Nelson’s”. Enjoy some vintage pictures and local skiing lore, here.
