Richland County: A Brief History
Richland County, abundant in woods and wetlands, is a central host to Wisconsin’s famous Driftless area. The Driftless area was left untouched by any glacial movement, leaving a large series of hills, bluffs and ridges. This Driftless area is prime hunting for game ranging from deer, turkey, ducks and geese.
Platted in 1851, Richland County had beautiful prairies and vast timber groves. Early settlers took advantage of the county’s timber bounty by employing the rivers for their lumber and grist mills. Agriculture influenced the area with the retail sales of butter and cheese.
Many effigy mounds appear within Richland County. Eagles Mounds- in Richland County, Eagle Township; as well as the Hill’s West- Calendar Mounds in Muscoda offer a glimpse into the life and heritage of local Indian tribes.
