Monroe County. A Brief History
Legend of Castle Rock and the Black Hawk War is part of Monroe County’s historical fabric. Weaved into this historical fabric were the first two Indian nations to have inhabited Monroe County- the Winnebago and Fox. Not far behind them was the Menominee tribe.
The Menominee, having a good reputation for being good-natured and brave warriors, were crucial assets to Marquette’s exploration of Monroe County.
As the push from East to West expanded, many Indian tribes lost their territory lands. In 1848 the Menominee Tribe relinquished all their lands in Wisconsin under the Treaty of Lake Poygan.
Within this treaty, the Menominee Indians were given new land in Minnesota. After arriving in their new land in Minnesota, the Menominee did not find the area to their liking. They asked the Wisconsin State Legislature for permission to remain in Wisconsin, and that request was granted.
Due to a lack of foresight, proper record-keeping was rarely done. This made for several problems for the county throughout its first years. The best guess any person has was the first settlement was near what was then Oil City, near the town of Sheldon. Esau Johnson was the first white man to settle in Monroe County in 1842.
In 1849, 1850, and 1851 a road was made from Auburn to Prairie du Chien and then Portage to La Crosse. These roads brought many new settlers to Monroe County.
After clearing land in different places throughout Monroe County, farming took its economic foothold with crops and dairy. Shortly after, St. Paul, Chicago, Milwaukee Railroad laid down tracks, and exporting and importing of Monroe County goods seeded the growth of many burgeoning towns along its route. The railroad line made Monroe County the successful and vibrant county it is today.
