Marquette County: A Brief History
Marquette County, village, and township are all named after Father Jacques Marquette. Father Marquette, a Jesuit explorer, along with Sieur Joliet, explore this region in 1673. Spent several days with the local Mascouten Indians on the southeast end of Lake Puckaway.
Many mound effigies remain to this day. Here is a map to help you explore these lasting tributes to the Indian settlers in Marquette County.
In 1848 Marquette became a county. Some of Marquette County’s top exports were butter, corn, rye, wheat, and cranberries. Fishing was very popular with local catches of bass, pickerel, and other varieties.
John Muir, Scottish-born naturalist, writer, and activist for forest conservation, lived an active part of his life here in Marquette County.
Most notable, Marquette County was known for its granite mining. Grant’s tomb granite originated from granite mined in Marquette County.
